Trailer Analysis: 'The Great Gatsby'
The production company-
The first shot that the audience see in the teaser trailer is the production company. The audience watching this will automatically know that this is the beginning of the teaser trailer to 'The Great Gatsby' because of the iconic background which features in all of the posters which would have been published previous to this. The production company itself is well established by the audience, being one of the six major Hollywood production companies.
SOUND
The trailer immediately begins with a background track which grabs the audiences attention.
Establishing Shot-
Of New York 1922- which the audience are told immediately in the trailer via voiceover by one of the main characters. The establishing shot, along with the voiceover, sets up the iconography for the rest of the film.
Gatsby's house-
what first sets the scene is one of the main locations in the film. Gatsby's mansion. the huge size tells the audience that he wants to be noticed and wants the attention.
The parties and 1920's style-
Mid shots-
There are 2 main actors introduced by mid shots 'Jordan Baker' and 'Nick Carraway' the shots being so close together indicate to the audience that they have some kind of relationship or friendship between them.
Montage-
the fast pace montage shots set the scene for the audience and lets them know more about the events in the film, this usually builds suspense and is backed up by the matching pace of music.
Introduction to main character-
The first time the audience see the main character of the film is 40 seconds into the teaser trailer, this creates a build up of suspence, the low angle shot suggests that this man is powerful, or at least shows himself off to be that way, it also shows his high value and status.
The director-
The directors name is mentioned early in the teaser trailer because he is so well know, audiences will recognize his name and the other films he has been given credit to.
Shot reverse shot-
The shot reverse shot between the 2 main actors Daisy and Gatsby shows the beginning of the love affair, there is huge emotion in the scene which the change in music emphasizes well, it is also reinforced by the boom of thunder in the background, the intense moment is only short drawing in the audience and making them want to watch the film.

Last shot of the teaser trailer- main actor & character-
The mid shot of Gatsby at the end of the trailer is the last shot, it suggests he is lonely as he watches over everyone else at his party and the other relationships which he strives for.
